Steven Volynets was born behind the Iron Curtain, in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and raised in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. He is the first prize winner of the 2016 Moment Magazine-Karma Foundation international award for fiction and a finalist for the 2021 J. F. Powers Prize for short fiction. His work has been nominated for The Pushcart Prize and listed in Best American Short Stories 2022. His fiction, essays, and literary translations are widely published. Before turning to books and dramatic writing, he had spent several years at PC Magazine where his reporting was listed for the Annual Jesse H. Neal Award for business journalism. After leaving PC Mag, he went on to cover crime and other news, writing for the Bklyner Network of local news sites and Tablet Magazine. When he is not working on his next novel, he enjoys writing scripts. One of them has been shortlisted for the 2017 Brooklyn Film Festival screenplay competition.
